Roughnecks

“True artists were scarce—nailing him down by such a simple device as stealing his pants! He loved them for it and wanted to see more of them, as violently as possible.”

“We defined thinking as integrating data and arriving at correct answers. Look around you. Most people do that stunt just well enough to get to the corner store and back without breaking a leg. If the average man thinks at all, he does silly things like generalizing from a single datum. He uses one-valued logics. If he is exceptionally bright, he may use two-valued, ‘either-or’ logic to arrive at his wrong answers. If he is hungry, hurt, or personally interested in the answer, he can’t use any sort of logic and will discard an observed fact as blithely as he will stake his life on a piece of wishful thinking. He uses the technical miracles created by superior men without wonder nor surprise, as a kitten accepts a bowl of milk. Far from aspiring to higher reasoning, he is not even aware that higher reasoning exists. He classes his own mental process as being of the same sort as the genius of an Einstein. Man is not a rational animal; he is a rationalizing animal.

“For explanations of a universe that confuses him he seizes onto numerology, astrology, hysterical religions, and other fancy ways to go crazy. Having accepted such glorified nonsense, facts make no impression on him, even if at the cost of his own life. Joe, one of the hardest things to believe is the abysmal depth of human stupidity.
—Robert Heinlein, Gulf, 1948
Robert Heinlein was one of the best writers this world has ever seen. If that is hyperbole, it is only slightly so. His prose seems effortless. It’s sometimes even light and airy, yet the concepts he proposed in his works question some of the precepts that we hold dearest. Heinlein routinely asked fundamental questions about our culture, our future, and the nature of self that a good many people have lived their entire existence without ever considering.

This is one reason why I could gleefully kick Paul Verhoeven to DEATH for that abortion he created and named Starship Troopers. Verhoeven INTENTIONALLY subverted that written work of Heinlein's based solely on his own personal, sociopolitical beliefs.

"According to the DVD commentary, Paul Verhoeven never finished reading the novel, claiming he read through the first few chapters and became both 'bored and depressed.'" The film's Wiki supplies, "Verhoeven states the film's message: 'War makes fascists of us all.' He evokes Nazi Germany—particularly through its use of fashion, iconography and propaganda—which he sees as a natural evolution of the post-World War II United States." This is nearly the polar opposite of the movie's supposed source material. The Wikipedia article on the book states, "The overall theme of the book is that social responsibility requires being prepared to make individual sacrifice." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Troopers_(film))

Themes aside, Mobile Infantry Powered Armor in the author’s words resembled a "hydrocephalic gorilla". Some artists render it thusly:

Now, consider how Verhoeven thoroughly corrupted the concept.

What Hollywood did to Starship Troopers was the artistic equivalent of giving a Bonobo chimpanzee some India ink and letting it paint directly on the canvas of the Mona Lisa. I’ll never NOT be annoyed by that. But, then, for some people “one of the hardest things to believe is the abysmal depth of human stupidity”. I definitely believe and understand this.

Forget "Like A Man"...Just THINK!

People who know me will attest to this fact: Treating me like you think I’m stupid is one of the surest ways to get me to show you how wrong you are…usually in a manner that makes you look really simple. I used to tell my ex-girlfriend all the time, “Stop managing me.” I could tell when she was trying to use conflict resolution techniques to assuage me. Newp! Use your own brain! Even if the methodology of thought in which you engage me is one you learned, personalize it. The only textbook solution that will work on me is disengagement. In other words, go away!

Come to think of it, that’s the final conflict resolution technique that she used on me. I’m amused. Touché, pussycat!

It’s cold as a witch’s tit here today! Why the hell is it 50-some’n degrees in Atlanta, right now?

I watched Think Like A Man this weekend. It was ok: Happily ever after for Black girls, and whatnot. They’ll leave the theater feeling empowered. That’s important.

Meanwhile…in THIS galaxy…men with brains three feet above their pelvis remain disenchanted with the characterization in the movies.

There were too many characters in this movie. What did we really know about the women? Having a relationship with a woman without knowing what’s particularly squirrelly about her is usually a recipe for a lot of arguing. Experience and anecdotal evidence speak volumes on the subject. For instance, why did one of the characters sleep with men on first dates before she was so miraculously saved by this dating bible written by a stand-up comedian? Chris Brown’s himbo character could NOT have been SMARTER when he approached her initially. Think about it. So, what was it? Daddy issues? Was she molested as a young girl? Was she just horny all the time? Seems trivial, but each one of those issues has kept many a man up at night wondering what the hell was wrong with his woman? But, that was untouched.

That was just one issue in five. Youngest female COO in corporate history? What drove that? Naked ambition? Fear of failure?

Where was that li’l boy’s daddy?

The best-rounded man in that clique of doofuses was the married, white man. He was also the wimpiest. Dude dunked on him and he congratulated him. Testosterone replacement therapy is in order. Did it have to be portrayed that way? Newp! But, the perception in the dominant culture in American society is that a married man is a domesticated man. Minivans & helmets for the kids cuz that’s what she wants.

Regardless, the rest of those male characters were so one-dimensional and flawed that if they turned sideways, they’d disappear. Sistas SWEAR that that’s how men really are on their dating scene. “You have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince.” *shrug* I know there are a lot of stupid, venal, selfish men out there. There’s no sense in being defensive about that. Still, there are a lot of good men out here who are struggling to do the right thing in a society that continues to look down upon them and who passed on or who are viewed as 'undateable'.

Anyway…if you watch the movie and enjoy it for the sake of entertainment, who could find fault in that? But, if you take those scripted behaviors or the book that inspired this movie as some sort of behavioral guide, then you can probably return your brain to sender marked “UNUSED”.

Monday Musing

Do you realize that The Usual Suspects is now 15 years old? That's older than my children. Wow, time flies.

My children told me that my 12-year-old daughter choked out a high-school boy. By way of explanation, my daughter said, "I told him to 'tap out', but he wouldn't." *smh* She doesn't even get how physically impressive she is and could be with more training.

Then, as I left to run an errand yesterday, she was in the parking lot playing football with the boys. Last night, she told me, "I love it when boys say, 'Girls can't play football." She also said that the QB would just tell her to "run it" and pitch her the football.

"Mildred have her bikini on, Saturday"
"Thank God, no!"

I'm gonna hurt myself trying not to laugh at these dudes.

Am I messing up? Am I supposed to discuss tools when I talk to other dudes? Acetylene torches? Welding? I'm in trouble.

...although, it does seem like 20% of the explosion-related deaths on darwinawards.com seem to be torch-related. No! No good could come of ME knowing about torches.

I will say this: WD-40 works like household napalm.

The only reason those true.com ads keep running is because suckers keep falling for the okey-doke. Yeah, some skinny, white girl with 34 to 38 teeth wants to talk to YOU...whilst tucking her hair behind her ears. And, she's excited to see your typed words, too. Because...even though she's what you think is hawt, she's gonna be home on the PC because nobody's trying to date (read: bone/screw/fuck/bang out) her in real life.

*smh* You poor, stupid schmuck.

The lady behind the fake pic has her comfortable shoes on the floor next to her. Her feet hurt from her long evening of stocking shelves at 'the Walmart'. She's kinda dumpy and she has three bad-assed kids, the oldest of whom always seems to get the 'good' weed, despite the fact that he's NEVER held a job longer than six weeks.

Anyway...

A WORD, PLEASE: Dark-skinned honies? You know I luh yew, right? Good! So, I'm saying this to you with all the love (and lust) in my heart:

STOP TRYING TO GO BLONDE!!!

Just stop it!

There is nothing wrong with the auburn or brunette hair that you naturally have. But, that peroxide blonde just DOESN'T look right on you! It makes you look cheap, fake and tawdry! You can do better than that. You really can.

*muttering* Ionno why everybody's been beating around THAT particular bush.
